The Solution Challenge
The Google for Developers Solution Challenge (GDSC) is held every year.
University students worldwide participate and use their technology skills to help address one or more of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recently, the winners of the GDSC 2024 were announced.
What are SDGs?
The Earth is our home. It gives us everything we need to be happy. But our planet and people face problems like climate change, poverty, lack of education, and clean water.
Some kids, just like you, don't have enough food or clean water, and many can't attend school.
So, the UN made 17 goals, known as the SDGs, for peace, prosperity, and a better future for the Earth and its people.
Member nations of the UN are encouraged to work together to end poverty, improve health and education, fight climate change, etc., to achieve the SDGs and improve the world.
Meet the winners
This year's winners have developed apps to help people.
ATTI (South Korea): In South Korea, many older people are facing dementia as they age. To help them, some students made a mobile app called Atti. It helps people with mild dementia remember things better.
Spoon Share (India): Every day, a lot of food gets wasted. So, Indian students created Spoon Share, an app that connects people who have extra food from events and restaurants with those who need it. This helps reduce food wastage.
Alpha-Eye (Nigeria): In Sub-Saharan Africa, many people lose their vision because they don't get help in time. A group of students made Alpha-Eye, a mobile app that can find eye diseases early to help save people's vision.
- Sahali (India): It's a mobile app made by Indian students to make women feel safer. The app has features, like SOS alerts, that can alert families when they face danger.
These apps have been created to make positive changes in people's lives. Which one is your favourite?
